Open giant JSON logs instantly, right in your terminal.

jaytail opens multi-gigabyte JSON logs in the terminal, lets you search, filter and export them, and moves a log file between two machines peer-to-peer.

Investigate

Find what matters. Fast.

Filter by level, component or any field. Search a field or the raw text. Export the results or pipe them to the tools you already use.

Filter by log level

A threshold or an exact level, combined with field filters like component~payments.

Explore structured logs

zerolog, zap, logrus, slog and pino look right without configuration. Time, level and message are found for you.

Inspect the full record

Open any row and read the whole object, nested fields included. Nothing is truncated.

Export selected rows

CSV, JSON, JSONL or HTML. Or use --plain=table and pipe to jq, less or your own scripts.

Share

Get the whole log, not a chat paste.

Ask a customer for their log file, or send yours to a colleague. One command on each side, encrypted end to end, no account for the other party, nothing stored anywhere.

Ask for a file

you@laptop
customer@shop-prod
You
$ jaytail requestprints a ticket and the line to send
On their server
$ curl -fsSL https://jaytail.dev/install | sh && ~/.local/bin/jaytail send jaytail1… /var/log/app.jsonl

They run it themselves, on their own machine, for the one file you asked for. No SSH, no upload portal, no screenshots.

Send a file

you@laptop
You
$ jaytail send --qr checkout.jsonlprints a ticket and a QR code
On the other machine
$ jaytail receive jaytail1…

Or photograph the QR code: jaytail receive --qr-image photo.jpg.

jaytail started with a customer pasting a backend log into Telegram, one broken page at a time. It exists so that the next time, they can run one command and I get the file.

FAQ

Questions

Do I need an account?

No. Your license is a short text you install once with jaytail license install. jaytail checks it offline; there is nothing to log in to.

How do I receive my license?

By e-mail, within one business day of your purchase, with the install instructions.

Can I use it on more than one machine?

Yes. A license is personal and works on all the machines you use. A company buys one license per person who uses jaytail.

What happens after the 12 months of updates?

The versions you have keep working forever. Newer releases are an optional paid upgrade. Complete Lifetime includes all future versions.

Does the other side need a license?

No. Whoever creates the ticket needs Complete: jaytail send FILE to offer a file, jaytail request to ask for one. The other side answers with the free binary: jaytail receive TICKET or jaytail send TICKET FILE.

What does my customer have to install?

One line on Linux and macOS, curl -fsSL https://jaytail.dev/install | sh, which needs no sudo and installs into ~/.local/bin; on Windows, irm https://jaytail.dev/install.ps1 | iex. jaytail request prints the complete line, ticket included.

What is the difference between Minimal and Complete?

Minimal contains no network code at all, for environments where networking tools are not allowed. Complete adds transfers: jaytail send and jaytail request.

Does jaytail send my logs anywhere?

Viewing, searching and exporting never touch the network. A file moves only in a transfer you start or answer, encrypted end to end, between the two machines that share the ticket.
